Trump escalates 'woman card' attack on Clinton

Donald Trump ratcheted up his attacks on Hillary Clinton for playing the “woman card” on Thursday, remarking in an interview with NBC’s “Today” that “frankly, all I’m doing is stating the obvious.”

“Without the woman’s card Hillary would not even be a viable person to run for city council positions,” the Republican front-runner said in a telephone interview with Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer.

Asked whether he thought women in the United States vote solely on gender, Trump said he did not.

“I think they vote for security, I think they vote for jobs and that’s why I’m doing so well, that’s why I’m leading the Republicans a lot,” he said, noting his success in exit polls among female voters in the five states he won on Tuesday.

Guthrie pressed Trump, referring to his comment earlier this week in which he suggested that Clinton would be getting 5 percent if she were not a woman. That comment, Guthrie remarked, would appear to suggest “the only thing she has going for her is that she was a woman, not that she was a former senator, former secretary of state and lawyer.”

“Do you understand why people find that to be kind of a demeaning comment?” Guthrie asked.

“I find it to be a true comment,” Trump responded. “I think the only thing she has got going is she’s a woman. 

She has done a terrible job in so many different ways.”

 No, I would say, the primary thing she has going is that she’s a woman,” he said. “She’s playing that card like I have never seen anybody play it before.”
