Obama says the US is divided Views and Commentary by Sherif Monem

US President Barack Obama said he is concerned that the way people consume news may be contributing to the growing divisiveness in the country. "The biggest challenge that I think we have right now in terms of this divide is that the country receives information from completely different sources," Obama said in  an interview with Rolling Stone  published this week. Obama suggested the root of the problem is that some people only look to news sources that confirm their existing political views. "People are no longer talking to each other; they're just occupying their different spheres," Obama said. He also commented on the proliferation of fake news —  a problem that put Facebook in the hot seat  during the election. "In an internet era where we still value a free press and we don't want censorship of the internet, that's a hard problem to solve," he said. // At first, Facebook founder  Mark Zuckerberg dismissed  accusations that p...

Obama to Be First Sitting President to Visit Hiroshima

Image
A war correspondent stood in the rubble in front of the remains of an exhibition center and government office in Hiroshima, Japan, on Sept. 8, 1945. The United States had dropped the first atomic bomb used in war on the Japanese city about a month earlier //   President Obama  will become the first sitting American president to visit Hiroshima, Japan, making a heavily symbolic stop this month at the site where the United States first  used an  atomic bomb  at the end of  World War II . The visit, which had been under consideration for most of Mr. Obama’s presidency, could serve as a coda to the transformation in the relationship between Japan and the United States from wartime enemies to the closest of allies. But it also has the potential to open old wounds, and it will take place in the shadow of a growing nuclear threat from North Korea. Both American and Japanese officials sought to avoid any appearance that the visit would amount to an apolo...

The Republicans who Control the Congress House Insist Tax Cut for Super Rich and Oppose Obama

Now that the Senate has voted to extend middle-class tax cuts, President Barack Obama is appealing to the GOP-run House to "do the right thing." At a Cabinet meeting, he told reporters the one-year extension will give families and businesses certainty at a time of economic worries in Europe and elsewhere. But GOP leaders say by exempting top income earners, the extension is a tax increase on job creators. And there's little chance the House will go along. Still, Obama said he and Cabinet secretaries will make the case in the next few days for the 218 votes needed for House passage. The president has long supported ending the Bush-era tax cuts for those making more than $250,000. The White House and the president's re-election team are reviving his arguments now as a way to suggest that the push by Romney and congressional Republicans for an across-the-board extension of the tax cuts could put America's middle class at risk. Republicans total nonsense lot of s...
